It isn’t surprising that details are scarce about the upcoming HBO Max Green Lantern series, given that it is still in the relatively early stages of development, but fans will be happy to know more news about the highly anticipated HBO Max Green Lantern series has been revealed by The Direct.
It looks like the series will have a rating of TV-MA meaning it is for Mature Audiences. Not many DC TV series fall into this rating and this is likely going to be due to the profanity and violence of the show according to The Direct. The site also revealed earlier that the Green Lantern series will include an all new Green Lantern named Bree Jarta, an African American woman with a human father and alien mother. She grew up on another planet with an advanced alien society.

The series will be featuring not only new characters like Bree Jarta, but a number of existing Green Lantern characters from the comics throughout the years. This will include newer Green Lanterns like Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz as well as long standing Green Lanterns like Guy Gardner and Alan Scott who was actually the first Green Lantern.
GREEN LANTERN STORYLINE SET IN THE 1980S
Bree Jarta will reportedly be working with Guy Gardner in a storyline that takes place in 1984. The Direct had previously reported that the Green Lantern series would take place in more than one timeline specifically the 1940s which will follow Alan Scott, the 1980s which features Guy Gardner and Bree Jarta, and the present day. This partnership could prove to be interesting given the fact that Jarta did not grow up on Earth and Gardner’s off-putting personality the two will likely clash. It looks like Jarta will not only be having to adjust to a new planet, but the racism of the era as well.

Given the fact that the series will have a TV-MA rating it wouldn’t be surprising that it will be dealing with some very serious topics. Not only the new character Bree Jarta having to deal with racism in 1984, but Alan Scott a gay man having to hide his sexuality during the 1940s, and probably many more very socially relevant issues.
The villain that Gardner and Jarta will be facing off against in 1984 has been revealed to be none other than the Dominators aka the Dominion. This will not be the first time the Dominators are featured in a DC television series. The aliens were the villains during the 2016 Arrowverse crossover “Invasion!”. This heavy focus on aliens indicates that the series will more than likely have a major intergalactic focus which has not been featured heavily on a DC television series.
The Dominators are not the only villains that will be a part of the series with Sinestro, a fan favorite antagonist and former member of the Green Lantern Corps, being a part of the upcoming series. It will be interesting to see if each timeline will feature a different villain or if there will be a central big bad who ties the storylines together.
