The Star Wars franchise continues to grow on Disney Plus and it looks like one of the live-action series that fan are eagerly awaiting, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will begin shooting sooner than expected. Star Wars has included great new content this year with the final season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the phenomenal second season of Disney Plus’ inaugural live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. This season The Mandalorian has notably brought fan-favorite characters, Bo-Katan Kryze and Ahsoka Tano, from Clone Wars into the live-action world.

Disney Plus still has a number of new series on the horizon with not only a Clone Wars animated spin-off series, The Bad Batch, but multiple live action series following the success of The Mandalorian. With the Cassian Andor series, the untitled female-centric Star Wars series from Leslye Headland, and the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

For those fans looking forward to seeing Ewan McGregor don his robes once again, there is some exciting news. It looks like the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series will be starting production sooner than expected. It’s being reported via a listing from the Film & Television Industry Alliance that the Obi-Wan series will begin shooting as soon as January 4, 2021. Filming will reportedly take place in Boston, Massachusetts and London, United Kingdom.

Considering fans have been waiting for this series since it was announced at D23 in 2019 the news that the series will begin production sooner than expected is exciting. Hopefully, more information about the series will come to light with the start of production.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is expected to use the Volume which is the same technology that The Mandalorian uses to create the background of scenes. Which would make sense given Ewan McGregor did a camera test on the set of The Mandalorian earlier this year. With not only fans, but McGregor himself excited to see the return of the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, this news of production beginning sooner is especially exciting considering the setbacks that the series suffered earlier this year.

Obi Wan

Details are scarce about the upcoming series, but it will follow the Jedi Master while he is exiled on Tatooine about eight years after the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, while the galaxy is under Empire control. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series has had a number of rumors about other returning fan favorites including Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series also looks like it could include the young Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, as well as a mystery co-lead character which The Illuminerdi reported on last month.

The Obi-Wan series will be the first time Ewan McGregor has returned to the role in over fifteen years since Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The series will be directed by Deborah Chow who is no stranger to Star Wars having directed two episodes of The Mandalorian during season one. The series is written by Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Deborah Chow. The Obi-Wan series has been ordered for six episodes and is planned as a limited series. And while there is no release date set, it is expected to debut on Disney Plus in 2022.
