Star Wars: The High Republic is officially launching tomorrow, January 5. And Star Wars not only held a livestream to celebrate the launch, but released an exciting cinematic trailer to get fans ready for this all new era of Star Wars stories.

Star Wars: The High Republic is set hundreds of years before the epic Skywalker Saga which fans have loved for over forty years. This is an entirely new series of Star Wars stories set during the Golden Age of the Jedi, which is what Obi-Wan Kenobi was referencing all those decades ago when he told Luke about the Jedi in A New Hope. The books, comics, and magazines will feature entirely new characters, although Yoda will be one familiar face that fans will see given that the Jedi is 900 years old in Return of the Jedi.

STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC TRAILER

The trailer for Star Wars: The High Republic is narrated by a Jedi who explains the premise and setting of the upcoming epic mega-story. The visuals are stunning and include concept art as well as what will likely be cover art or art from the comics.

“We are the guardians of peace and justice. Beyond the stars is a near endless frontier. Our order was meant to shine its light in even the darkest corners of the galaxy. There we found an evil that none of us had trained for that threatens all we know. For the survival of the republic, the fate of all Jedi, for control of the force itself.”

This is an era of Jedi who are not warriors as they became during the Clone Wars, or embroiled in a dangerous political game, or hiding to survive as they did during the reign of the Empire. Star Wars: The High Republic will introduce numerous Jedi Knights, Masters, and Padawans who are all striving to keep the peace in a galaxy that is thriving.

The trailer also shows two of the major villains that will be introduced in Star Wars: The High Republic stories, the Nihil and the Drengir. The Nihil have been described as space Vikings or pirates with no code of honor; villains who take what they want and will kill anyone who gets in their way. The Drengir are something out of a sci-fi nightmare, being sentient plants that are tuned into the dark side of the force and eat people. Star Wars has introduced some of the most famous villains in cinematic history, leaving big shoes to fill for this new era. Thankfully, the Nihil and Drengir definitely seem up to the task.

Other than the numerous Jedi, another character is shown in the exciting trailer: Chancellor Lina Soh, who was flanked by two lion like creatures. For most Star Wars fans the title Chancellor will forever be tied to Palpatine, who used the office to help him destroy the very Republic he was meant to be leading. But unlike Palpatine, Chancellor Lina Soh has led the Republic during a period of peace and prosperity, even spearheading the exploration into the Outer Rim.

This is a new era for Star Wars and it will be told over the course of books (for adults and kids alike), comics, graphic novels, manga, and serialized stories in the Star Wars Insider magazine. But that is not all, this new era has already spawned a live action Disney Plus series, Acolyte a mystery thriller which will be set at the end of The High Republic era and the emerging of dark side power.

There are also reports of an animated series in development that will be set during the High Republic era. With new characters and stories this is an exciting time for Star Wars fans because unlike in the past the only thing known going in is that Yoda will not die. Everything else is new territory and the trailer reflects this amazing new epic.

Star Wars: The High Republic officially launches January 5, 2021 with the release of Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule, A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland, and The Great Jedi Rescue by Cavan Scott. The first issue of Cavan Scott’s Star Wars: The High Republic Marvel comic series will be released on January 6, 2021. February 2, 2021 is when Claudia Gray’s Into The Dark will be available, and then February 21, 2021 marks the first issue of IDW’s The High Republic Adventures by Daniel Jose Older.
