Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse has faced many delays, first in development and then due to COVID-19, but the Michael B. Jordan led film will be premiering on Amazon Studios this Friday.
In the Without Remorse virtual press conference stars Michael B. Jordan and Jodie Turner-Smith talked about the preparation and physical aspects of this filming process. Without Remorse is full of intense action sequences throughout and Director, Stenfano Sollima, is known for wanting his actors to do the majority of their own stunts and Without Remorse was no exception.
MICHAEL B. JORDAN GETS INTO THE NITTY GRITTY OF UNDERWATER TRAINING FOR WITHOUT REMORSE
As Michael B. Jordan explained, “It’s one of those things where your breath and breathing is definitely a trained thing. It’s an exercise. So, if you stop training and you stop exercising that muscle you can definitely lose it, but you know underwater training was definitely something that we spent a lot of time in. We knew we had these sequences earlier in the script development phase, Stefano looked at me and was like ‘Mike, you know you gotta do all these right?’ and I’m like ‘Yeah, yeah of course. Easy, easy no problem.’
So, we hooked up with some military divers and we spent time in the tanks and put us under stressful situations where we would have to problem solve, work through malfunctions, gear failure, work through military rebreathers. Which was basically machines that these soldiers would wear to basically suppress all the bubbles so they could breathe underwater without leaving any physical traces.”
“Heavy as hell!” Jodie Turner-Smith cut in.
Michael B. Jordan laughed and agreed, “Like I don’t know how many pounds they would weigh, but they were so heavy. But then you have a floatation bag that you had to manipulate the pressure of, so you can kind of be buoyant enough to stay underwater, but not buoyant enough to float to the top. So, anyway, it was a lot of very detailed training that we went through for the water exercises and, yeah, I can hold my breathe during filming for pretty long maybe about three minutes or so, something like that.”
Jodie Turner-Smith explained that Michael B. Jordan used a specific song, which she wouldn’t reveal, while holding his breath and that he would hold his breath for the entire song, even after the scene was done filming. And director Stefano Sollima recalled him dancing underwater after filming.

Jodie Turner-Smith talked more about how she, Michael B. Jordan, and the other actors trained to appear as an authentic Navy SEAL unit in Without Remorse:
“As part of the production they had us working with these guys on set that were making sure that we had integrity with the way that we were moving, the way that we moved as a team, the way that we were moving in combat, the way we would use our weapons, the way that we were commanding each other in groups. Because these are men that are working together all the time to the point where they become a unit.
They become like one and we’re needing to emulate this idea, that we have been for years living this life and working together. So it was all of that and just throwing myself into all of it and one thing about Stefano is he really wants to make it look as cool and interesting as possible by having us do as much as we can.”
Jodie Turner-Smith explained that she had some experience with action from her time on the TNT series The Last Ship, but what made Without Remorse more intense was that she was pregnant during filming.
“First of all, I was pregnant at the time. So that definitely added a level of intensity to it that I didn’t even myself anticipate. I mean I’m used to feeling like ‘Ok, I’m a strong person. I’m an athletic person. I can push my body to the limit to do this, this, and that’ and to sort of jump into this and I kind of have a little bit of a background in this genre being that I started on a television show on TNT called The Last Ship.
That was kind of my first big role on television and that was all about just running around, getting the bad guys, jumping in and out of stuff, getting exploded. So I thought this was something that I was definitely ready to throw my body into. But to sort of add that really unique and…I mean nobody really tells you what all that your body is going through and it’s so funny because I’ve trained for many things in my life, but what was required of me physically with carrying this baby and doing this film is unlike anything that I have ever experienced.”
Jodie Turner-Smith’s revelation that she was pregnant adds another layer to her performance making the physical aspects of the role even more impressive. It’s clear that with the training and preparation that Jodie and Michael B. Jordan went through to make Without Remorse they were dedicated to making their performances authentic.
