**MAJOR SPOILERS FOR EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE**
The Illuminerdi’s We’re Always Watching is our new movie podcast where members of this nerd collective discuss the newest movies to hit theaters and streaming services. On this week’s episode, we will give listeners a bit of insight into the filmmaking process as we look back at the pre-production and production news during filming. We’ll also go through any exclusives we had about this project and look at which were true and if any weren’t, why that might be. We will also of course be breaking down and giving our in-depth review of the movie.
THE ILLUMINERDI’S WE’RE ALWAYS WATCHING: EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
In this episode of Kevin Fenix, one of our editors, Caitlin Tyrrell, one of our journalists and features manager, and Jezzer, of The Illuminerdi’s Ranger Wrap Up, are diving into the multiverse insanity of Everything Everywhere All At Once. Everything Everywhere All At Once follows an Asian American family with a struggling laundromat who unexpectedly get swept up in a multiversal adventure of massive proportions.
Everything Everywhere All At Once has become A24’s highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office earning more than $50 million. The success of Everything Everywhere All At Once is beyond exciting not only because this is an entirely original story which is rare, but because the cast of this hit film is primarily Asian and Asian American.
In this episode, the crew talks about what makes good genre storytelling and why Everything Everywhere All At Once nails it by focusing on the family at the heart of the story. The film utilizes the fantasy multiverse elements brilliantly while always focusing on the humanity and struggle of the characters and family. We also share how we personally relate to the different characters in the movie. Caitlin talks about her experience coming out while Kevin talks about growing up with immense pressure to succeed.
Kevin, Jezzer, and Caitlin also talk about the growing landscape for Asian and Asian American actors lamenting the fact that the world missed out on so much Ke Huy Quan. We also talk about how Everything Everywhere All At Once handles the multiverse in comparison to other movies specifically Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. We share some of our favorite parts and which were the most insane or horrifying (Caitlin cannot handle the hot dog fingers!).
