Charlize Theron has shared some behind-the-scenes pictures from the set of the anticipated sequel to The Old Guard.
While 2020 was a relatively empty year for movies, caused by the pandemic, Netflix did have quite a few hits that year. Enola Holmes starring Millie Bobby Brown as the young sister of the famous detective, was a witty adventure (with a sequel coming later this year) or Chris Hemsworth’s action spectacle Extraction, which is also getting a sequel. But the year also gave us another action film led by a huge star: The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron fought his way into Netflix’s Top Ten Films up to place six.
TAKE A PEEK AT THE CAST OF THE OLD GUARD 2
So, to no one’s surprise, a sequel was fastly greenlit, which we at The Illuminerdi reported first back in January 2021. Now one and a half years after that, Theron shared some behind-the-scenes photos from the film:

Besides the returning cast consisting of Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Marwan Kenzari, the sequel also got some exciting newcomers.
Uma Thurman who is best known for her iconic role in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill duology has joined the cast. She even earned an Oscar nomination for her supporting turn in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. She was last seen in the Disney+ original film Hollywood Stargirl.
Theron also posted some photos of her and Thurman during playful training after the workday.
The other exciting newcomer is Henry Golding. He is best known for his role in the hit romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, but he also showed that he is capable of performing action scenes in last year’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. He can next be seen in Netflix’s Jane Austin adaptation Persuasion alongside Dakota Johnson.
The Old Guard is based on the Image Comic series with the same name. Created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez the series consists of 16 issues and the currently untitled movie sequel is said to take inspiration from the second issue. Rucka also penned the screenplays for both pictures.

The sequel will be directed by Victoria Mahoney. She is best known for her work as a Second Unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The director of the original film, Gina Prince-Bythewood will serve as a producer on the film. Her next film called The Woman King, a historical action epic starring Viola Davis hits theatres this September.
The first film followed a group of eternal warriors in their fight against an evil corporation, which wants to replicate and monetize her powers to use them against the living. It garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences alike and was praised for its action sequences and LGBTQ+ representation.
I wasn’t huge about The Old Guard. While I liked the action sequences, I felt like the concept of eternally living warriors was heavily underused and the plot also drifted off into generic action film tropes pretty quickly. While Theron is a more than capable leading action hero, there was potential for so much more. I’m very excited about the two new casting additions, especially Henry Golding, who is still my pick to become the next James Bond. This gives him another opportunity to show off his action skills. And it’s going to be great to see Uma Thurman back in the action genre. I am a bit worried about the change in the director chair, but I’m hoping to be surprised.
The Old Guard 2 will hit Netflix sometime next year.
