The Heartstopper star is set to join the MCU.
What a great few weeks for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Last week we got the first exciting trailer for the third entry in the Ant-Man franchise, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The trailer showed off larger stakes and a bigger story compared to the previous two films, but we also got our first look at the MCU’s next big bad with Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror. While fans were still buzzing, Marvel Studios dropped the next trailer for their last project in 2022: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The second Marvel Studios Special Presentation looks like a fun time with the Guardians to get into the Christmas spirit.
THE HEARTSTOPPER IS LOOKING TO STOP SOME HEARTS IN THE MCU
The news didn’t stop as Marvel Studios has now also found their Wonder Man for his Disney+ series in Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The news arrives at a time when Marvel still hasn’t officially revealed this project even after two big presentations at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and Disney’s D23 convention.
While Kevin Feige officially confirmed two Avengers films with The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, as well as a Thunderbolts film, a Daredevil series, and a lot more there wasn’t much chatter about the Agatha Harkness series. The only news we got is that Marvel changed the name of the show from Agatha: House of Harkness to Agatha: Coven of Chaos and has a rough release window.
WICCAN IS THAT YOU?
Now Sarah Halley Finn (Marvel Studios’ go-to casting director) strikes again as Heartstopper breakout Joe Locke is set to join the mysterious WandaVision spin-off Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
The news was exclusively revealed by Variety, which also first reported that this series was happening back in September 2021. The outlet stated as is often the case Locke was cast in an undisclosed role.
Deadline could reveal a bit more as they stated Locke’s character is “a gay teen with a dark sense of humor”.
The young actor just had his breakthrough performance in the highly popular Netflix series Heartstopper. He plays the leading character Charlie Spring in his first scripted television role and has just been nominated for a Kids Emmy. The series premiered this summer and instantly became one of IMDB’s highest-rated shows and quickly got renewed by Netflix for not only one but two more seasons. Season 2 is currently filming.
The biggest question that fans now have is: Who is he playing? Most people think he could be the teenage version of Billy or better known as his superhero alter ego Wiccan. The character was rumored to appear in the series a while ago because of a casting call, but insiders are still a bit torn if that is the case. The second option would be that he is playing a younger version of Nicolas Scratch, Agatha’s son in the comics. Hopefully, we know more soon.
Agatha: Coven of Chaos brings back Kathryn Hahn as the scene-stealing character. Emma Caulfield Ford, who played Dottie in WandaVision is also set to return. Jac Schaeffer, the creator of the Emmy-winning show returns as a writer and executive producer for this spin-off. She also has a Vision-centric show in the works.
I’m excited about Locke joining the MCU. It just proves again that Marvel is the best at getting popular talent to join their universe. While it is still very much in the air, who Locke is playing I suspect it will be Wiccan, as I see him more as a Hero than a possible villain with Nicolas Scratch. Hopefully, we’ll know more soon when the show starts production in December.
Agatha: Coven of Chaos is set to hit Disney+ in Winter 2023/Spring 2024.
