The Walking Dead is over, but the story of Rick and Michonne is gearing up for a brand-new chapter. The Illuminerdi has learned some exciting information about their spinoff which we can now reveal.
The Walking Dead is one of the most successful and popular TV series of all time. The show ran for 11 seasons on AMC, only coming to a close earlier this year. Before the resolution of the original series, several TWD spinoffs were announced. These include The Walking Dead: Dead City, which follows Maggie and Negan. Daryl Dixon and of course, Rick & Michonne.
Rick & Michonne may or may not be the official title of the series. AMC+ released a series of posters for their upcoming spinoffs, including one that featured Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, and “RICK AND MICHONNE: NEW SERIES COMING SOON”. Regardless of just what the official title for this exciting new story is, the working title is a different matter.
THE WALKING DEAD: RICK & MICHONNE: OFFICIAL VS. WORKING TITLES
The Illuminerdi has learned exclusively from our sources that the working title of the Rick and Michonne spinoff is “Summit”. A summit is the highest part of a mountain. It’s the peak. We can only speculate as to why the creative team gave the Michonne and Rick spinoff this working title, of course. Showrunner Scott Gimple described the upcoming series as an “epic love story” at the Variety Entertainment Summit in September 2022.
The Walking Dead made headlines 4 years ago, again at the Variety Entertainment Summit, when Norman Reedus declared that he could play Daryl Dixon forever. Perhaps the working title for the Rick and Michonne series is a reference to this new show? Alternatively, “Summit” is a descriptor of the new series created by Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira and Scott Gimple.
Do these creative minds believe that this spinoff is the pinnacle of The Walking Dead’s story? Could that signify how important this story is to the overarching saga of zombie horror? We may never know why this working title was chosen. In a recent interview with SELF, it was revealed that Rick & Michonne will begin filming in January of 2023.
THE WALKING DEAD’S DANAI GURIRA ON RICK AND MICHONNE
“Gurira is certainly working to bring her own stories forth. She’s currently ‘in high gear’ working on her Walking Dead spinoff, which she reveals is set to begin shooting in January. Following Michonne and Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes after their departures from the main show in 2020 and 2018, respectively, Gurira describes the upcoming series as ‘an epic love story tale.’ As a cocreator (along with The Walking Dead producer and writer Scott Gimple) of the spinoff, which she calls a ‘prestige miniseries,’ Gurira has found it exciting to help build the show from the ground up.”
Our sources have revealed that the production is planning to shoot through April 2023. In other words, the 6-episode series would shoot for roughly 4 months, beginning next year. Filming schedules change sometimes, and reshoots are always possible, but that appears to be the plan as it currently stands.
Additionally, The Illuminerdi has learned that the Rick and Michonne spinoff will film in New Jersey, confirming rumors that Michonne and Rick’s new show would film in that location.
THE WALKING DEAD: RICK & MICHONNE HEAD TO NEW LOCATIONS
These are not necessarily the locations that the characters will be in, just where the TV miniseries is being shot. In fact, showrunner Scott Gimple claimed that Rick & Michonne will take The Walking Dead fans to places the franchise has never gone before. New York was featured in the previous spinoff, The Walking Dead: World Beyond.
Rick and Michonne Grimes have a long and complicated history. From enemies, to friends, to lovers, and practically everywhere in-between, these two are quite the dynamic duo. Their lives have been a fight against both the living and the living dead for years. Could their reunion, wherever that may be, finally provide these heroes with an escape from the madness of the Walkers?
