The Flash’s Sasha Calle Wants to Return as Supergirl in New Woman Of Tomorrow DCU Film Adaptation

The Flash's Sasha Calle proves to be a Supergirl superfan and is eager to continue her journey in the DCU. Here's what she had to say...

The Flash’s Sasha Calle really wants to put her stamp on Supergirl for the foreseeable future, new DC Universe or not. The actor, who will debut as Kara/Supergirl in the speedily-approaching The Flash movie, recently sat down with EW  to gush about her love for the character as well as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic upon which the upcoming Supergirl film will be based.

Sasha Calle’s Super Enthusiasm For Kara And The Comics

Speaking with EW on playing Supergirl, Calle said:

Sasha Calle Supergirl

“I hope to continue playing Supergirl. I love her deeply! And I think that [The Flash] is really a runway to a bigger story for her,” she says. “We don’t really get to experience a lot. I feel like this is a runway to a bigger story. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, by Tom King, is an incredible comic. I love it. I think it’s so cool. So yeah, I would hope to continue. I hope to continue playing Supergirl for sure.”

Calle’s love for the character is immediately clear, but what’s unknown at this point is whether her iteration could make it into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU. When she was cast as the Kryptonian for The Flash, that film was meant to be an introduction to her and other characters who would then get their own movies taking place after it.

Of course, that was before Gunn and Safran took over with the former announcing a nearly clean slate for the ongoing franchise. We know that Gunn himself is a huge lover of DC comics and is aware of the fanbase for the DCEU line of characters, as was made clear when he had stated that Shazam might have returned if Fury of the Gods had performed well financially (which it unfortunately did not).

When Woman of Tomorrow was officially announced, Gunn claimed,

“The movie will be a “big science-fiction epic film.. Superman is a guy who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, whereas Supergirl, in this story, she is a character who was raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”

While there are currently no plans to see Sasha Calle’s Supergirl return after The Flash, those plans could potentially change if audience reception to her proves positive. Now, we obviously don’t know where Calle’s Supergirl will be at the end of The Flash or exactly how much future films will reference and be impacted by its events. However, given Calle’s passion for the character and knowledge of the source material, it would be cool to see her take the mantle for the future.

Along with hoping to portray the character in future films, Sasha Calle also made clear her affinity for the Supergirl comics that have made the character a beloved part of DC’s line-up:

“I advise people to pick up comic books. I advise people to go into a comic book store and have fun, and to sit there and just open everything up because it is the most fun experience,” she says. “When I see a comic book store, I just immediately walk in and I’m like, ‘Where’s Supergirl?’ and I just read it all.”

There you have it: Sasha Calle is clearly willing and able to portray Kara in The Flash and beyond, plus she loves the comics too. We’ll be able to see her debut in The Flash on June 16th, 2023, and hopefully more down the line.
