Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder’s revitalized Star Wars-inspired project, is set to debut exclusively on streaming at the end of this year. The set photos, first-look pictures, and its premise hint at a large-scale production and a massive visual spectacle. And producer Eric Newman has confirmed that the film truly is as huge as its hype.
Snyder had developed Rebel Moon as a Star Wars project before Lucasfilm was sold to Disney, wherein the latter discarded the idea. A classic tale of rebellion, fight, and revolution against oppression and totalitarianism, Rebel Moon does seem to honor the roots that take precedence in heroes’ journeys like A New Hope. Like A New Hope featured a young protagonist setting up forces against Imperial evil, Snyder’s new film also deals with a similar premise.

Kora, a former Imperium member, goes on a quest to unionize warriors against Mother World’s forces. The setting of an intergalactic space war, extra-terrestrial life, and interplanetary travel does give a Star Wars-like vibe of a large-scale filmmaking process. In his interview with ScreenRant, Eric Newman teased Rebel Moon and shared his experience on set working with Zack Snyder.
What Can We Expect From Rebel Moon?
Newman teased the surrealism of the project and claimed it to be the biggest production of his career. Newman also reminisced about his first experience with Zack on Dawn of the Dead while promising that moviegoers would love Rebel Moon. Talking of his reunion with Snyder, Newman said:
“Zack Snyder and I made our first movie together many years ago, Dawn of the Dead, which is still one of the highlights of my career experience. And we’ve stayed friends. Zack had just finished Army of the Dead at Netflix, and I’m based at Netflix, and it just sort of made sense that [we] would do this together. It’s been so fun. It’s a massive movie. I would sometimes drive on to set, and I would look out in the distance and think like, ‘Could that possibly be part of our show?’ And it always was. It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever done, and it’s really cool. I’m excited for people to see it. I think you’ll love it!“
Teasing the relevance of Rebel Moon’s themes, Newman further added:
“We had been talking for a long time about doing it, and there was a moment where he was hoping it’d be part of the Star Wars universe, but to do sort of a Magnificent Seven in space type story. The world, unfortunately, [always has] the threat of totalitarianism, and we who must unite against it. It’s more relevant now than it ever was.”
Eric Newman’s comments certainly help Zack Snyder’s forthcoming project. The project’s roots in Star Wars mixed with the surrealism that Snyder instills in his films is a wonderful cinematic combination. The film’s vague connection to George Lucas’ vastly expanded deep space adventures could be a gigantic promotional move for Rebel Moon and an excellent fan service for cinema lovers.
Rebel Moon is Already Expanding
A story of a band of recruits that take a stand against an evil empire, Rebel Moon is like The Seven Samurai meets Star Wars. And just like the latter, it has already begun its expansion. Rebel Moon has already been confirmed to be split into two parts. Moreover, repeating his DC history, Snyder has planned for extended R-Rated cuts of Rebel Moon that will be made available to the public shortly after the film’s release. There are also talks about a TV series and a role-playing video game set in this universe. And a novelization of the film is confirmed to release in December 2023.

There is much to know about the characters of Rebel Moon, but given Snyder’s history, his best guys also have a gray shade to their arcs and progressions. Rebel Moon is a world that Snyder’s building and could have unlimited prospects and projections. However, this science-fiction adventure must intrigue the viewers enough for a future.
Rebel Moon Part I will release on December 22, 2023, on Netflix. Let us know what you think over on social media!
