DC COMICS – 5 Great New Comic Books Available Now

Everything you need to know about 5 thrilling new comic books published by DC Comics on Jan. 16, 2024!
DC Comics

DC Comics publishes new books every Tuesday, and this week there are multiple promising issues worth checking out.

Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), The Flash (Jay Garrick) and the Titans (formerly the Teen Titans, the crew is a bit older now) all star in brand new issues from DC this week. These heroes of the DC Universe all have fascinating stories to tell, but before digging into those, an honorable mention goes out to Nightwing #110.

Tom Taylor is the writer of Dick Grayson’s charming solo series. Taylor is also writing Titans #7, and since that book features Nightwing in a prominent role, this week’s list won’t explore his solo book in detail. That being said, it does feature Damian Wayne as a cat-person, so you may want to give it a look.

DC COMICS PRESENTS – CATWOMAN #61

Selina Kyle, AKA Catwoman is one of the most beloved vigilantes to call Gotham City home. She grew up on the streets and in the darkness became an unrivaled thief with a heart of gold. Catwoman recently fought her on-again off-again lover Batman in the “Gotham War” event.

Catwoman trained henchmen and low-level criminals in Gotham to become master thieves like herself and gave them a code. Steal from only the rich, and avoid violence at all costs. Batman cannot stand behind the Cat’s mission of improving the criminal element’s ability to steal and rob, and the two come to blows. At the end of the crossover, Catwoman took a break from Bruce and the city, but Gotham War had changed her.

Catwoman was given nine lives by a meteor infused with the power of the Lazarus Pit. She has already lost a few lives on what would otherwise be suicide missions. This week, Selina’s adventures go nuclear as she dives into a dangerous reactor.

Kyle goes on her most daring and deadly heist yet—leaping headfirst into the heart of a melted-down nuclear reactor to steal highly valuable corium. But can she escape with only losing just one life…or are all her nine extra lives about to burn away?!

John Stewart stands tall in the fight against the monstrous “Radiant Dead” in Green Lantern: War Journal. This series is written by Phillip K. Johnson, illustrated by Montos, with coloring by Chris Sotomayor and Adriano Lucas. The horrifying beings known as the Radiant Dead recently infected John Stewart, but he overcame that affliction rather swiftly.

John Stewarts connection to the power of the Green Lantern is now, as he described it, “intrinsic”. He normally doesn’t need to harness a ring in order to use his abilities, but since he was infected, he couldn’t use his powers in the same way or he would become one of the creatures. Teaming up with Steel, John Stewart kickstarted one of the Radiant Dead’s defunct lantern rings and imbued it with the power of will. In this new issue, our hero uses this new ring go on the offensive and hunt his enemies.

Suited up with new armor and his newly forged, experimental Green Lantern ring, John Stewart leads his allies Shepherd and Prophet Rayner into the rain forest on a race against time to stop the Radiant Dead’s invasion of Earth! Can John destroy the Darkstar ring and save Earth…before succumbing to the deadly infection himself? The Revenant Queen’s mysterious bond with John Stewart is revealed in this pivotal issue!

Jay Garrick is the original hero known as “The Flash”, predating Barry Allen and Wally West. He is a founding member of the Justice Society of America, the original superpowered team. Jay Garrick was recently reunited with his daughter Judy Garrick, AKA The Boom. Judy was removed from existence a long time ago – even her family’s memory of her disappeared.

Judy’s disappearance is tied to the evil Dr. Elemental, a mad scientist who shares a secret history with The Flash. Jay Garrick: The Flash #4 will explore the bonds between both hero and villain, and father and daughter. Writer Jeremy Adams and artist Diego Olortegui are working with colorist Luis Guerrero and letter Steve Wands, collectively telling a tale of family love through a colorful sci-fi lens.

JAY AND JUDY RACE TO STOP DR. ELEMENTAL! Dr. Elemental’s history is revealed as Jay Garrick and his daughter, Judy, race to dismantle a plan 80 years in the making!

TITANS #7

The upcoming seventh issue of Titans is a tie-in to Beast World. An ongoing crossover event with the Titans front and center, Beast World is a battle of Beast Boy vs. everyone…in a sense. Beast Boy became a giant cosmic starfish with mind control powers in order to stop a threat known as the Necrostar. But his mind was destroyed after their fight, and as a result, the mindless Beast Boy unleashed spores of change on the earth.

His spores seek out the strongest humans and metahumans and changes them into animal-human hybrids. This entire conflict was set in motion by Brother Eternity, leader of a reformed religious cult called the Church of Eternity. Titans #6 featured an emotional and powerful backstory for Starfire, and it looks like Eternity is connected to her past. Wonder Girl has Beast Boy bound with her Lasso of Persuasion currently, but that can’t last forever. To see how Starfire is connected to Brother Eternity and how the team tries to bring back Beast Boy, pick up a copy of Titans #7.

Brother Eternity shows his true self as the Titans battle for their friend with the hope of freeing him from the enigmatic cult leader’s spell. Will exposing the Church of Eternity and their ulterior motives turn the tide of the war for Earth?

Standing beside Batman and Superman, Diana Prince has been an icon of justice for decades. She is one of the greatest superheroes of all time, and her ongoing series is building on that incredible legacy with each captivating issue. Diana is fighting the United States government itself right now, who have declared that all Amazons must leave the country.

An Amazonian woman killed several individuals in a bar back in the first issue, and the government used that as an opportunity to discriminate against Wonder Woman’s people. Wonder Woman is trying to unravel the mystery of the murder and the greater conspiracy at play here – a conspiracy that involves the Lasso of Lies and the secret King of America.

For all of the juicy details AND a bonus issue starring Wonder Woman’s charming daughter of the future, Trinity, purchase your very own Wonder Woman #5 today.

If the U.S. government can’t stop her, then who can?! As Sargent Steel retreats to gather deadlier forces, the Wonder Girls call on Diana, begging her to lay down her lasso. Will she see the truth before it’s too late? Plus, Trinity invites the sons of Batman and Superman to Themyscira for a contest they’ll never forget!
