Andy Muschietti, the director of the upcoming The Flash film, recently glowed about a certain cameo in the film that will definitely surprise the DC fandom.

The Flash will focus on the titular DC Comics character played by Ezra Miller altering the timeline to prevent his mother’s death, causing all kinds of mayhem in the new timeline he created. The Flash‘s production has simultaneously inspired controversy and curiosity from audiences, ever since it was announced nearly a decade ago.

The Flash Promises New Surprises From The Multiverse

It’s been speculated that the multiverse will be a major aspect of The Flash‘s story, since characters like the Batman ’89 iteration of Batman and a new version of Supergirl, played by Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle respectively, are also in the film.

In the midst of this speculation, Muschietti revealed in an interview that legendary actor, Nicholas Cage, will cameo in the film as a version of Superman in the grand DC multiverse. “Nic was absolutely wonderful. Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it,” Muschietti said in the interview.

Muschietti would further shower praise towards Cage, mentioning that the actor is a “comic book fanatic” and a “massive Superman fan.”

Muschietti also opened up on the possibility of working on more projects with Cage, adding “I dreamt all my life to work with him.” I hope I can work with him again soon.”

Cage’s decades-long career has included roles in films like National Treasure and Mandy. Owing to his love for comic books, Cage is definitely no stranger to portraying comic book characters, as he was Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider in Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, along with being the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

This cameo is a special one for The Flash as Cage was almost Superman in director Tim Burton’s scrapped Superman Lives film from the ’90s. Superman Lives‘ development would become notable enough to be recounted in the documentary, The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened?. While Cage would voice Superman in the animated film, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, Cage finally playing the character in live-action pays off decades of speculation regarding how he’d approach the role.

In the context of The Flash, Cage’s cameo is another sign of the film’s emphasis on alternate timelines and the multiverse. Perhaps, Cage’s cameo factors into a hypothetical sequence, where Barry must head into the Speed Force or the multiverse to set things right for the timeline. If this sequence becomes a reality, Cage’s cameo role as Superman opens the door to The Flash’s encounters with retro versions of DC characters from across different media in the film.

Taking Burton’s ties to both characters into account, Keaton’s Batman meeting Cage’s Superman would be a surreal experience. Lastly, if Cage’s cameo as Superman is well-received by general audiences, it could lead to a “DC Elseworlds” project with his take on Superman as the lead character.

I’ve seen worries from the comic book movie fandom that comic book movies are becoming too reliant on cameos. In contrast, I’m optimistic that Cage’s cameo will add a lot to the film’s focus on the multiverse and be a reminder of the legacy of DC Comics’ film adaptations. Even if it’s a brief cameo, Cage’s eccentric acting style ensures it will surely be memorable.
