Clone Wars star Sam Witwer, the voice of Darth Maul, recently dropped some hints about the upcoming animated series, The Bad Batch.

Lucasfilm recently announced their new animated series, The Bad Batch, which will focus on the group of clones who were introduced in the first arc of the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Clone Force 99, aka The Bad Batch, are a group of clones with mutations that the Republic deemed useful. They are the elite team called in to take on impossible missions that no one else can achieve.

Each member of The Bad Batch has specific abilities due to their mutations. The group is led by Hunter, who has enhanced senses and the ability to detect electromagnetic signals. Wrecker, who is the group’s strongman being larger and much stronger than other clones. Crosshair uses his exceptional eyesight to be one of the best snipers in the galaxy. While Tech is extremely intelligent and technically skilled, making him the technology specialist and an impressive strategist for the group.

At the end of the four episode arc, Echo, who was originally a part of Rex’s 501st Legion and presumed dead, joins the group of mutated clones. Echo feels he no longer fits in with Rex and the other Clone troopers due to his cybernetic enhancements at the hands of the Separatists who tortured him, but he did with The Bad Batch.

Sam Witwer Darth Maul The Bad Batch

Clone Wars fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming series which focuses on this ragtag group of clones. Sam Witwer, who voiced Darth Maul in both The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, has dropped some hints about The Bad Batch during a recent Twitch stream.

“I will tell you it looks really really good…It looks absolutely beautiful. The story…at least I know where the story begins for the first several episodes and I was very pleased because it’s a little area of Star Wars that has not often been visited.”

That makes sense given that the series will be following The Bad Batch after the events of Order 66 where the Clones killed the majority of the Jedi. While following the groups exploits as they try to figure out who they are after the Clone Wars, fans will likely get to see the immediate ramifications of the creation of the Empire. Along with the end of the Clone Wars and the Republic.

Sam Witwer went on to compare the animation quality for The Bad Batch to the final season of The Clone Wars,

“It meant getting a lot of people back in there that had previously been at Lucasfilm and moved on when Clone Wars was cancelled. In order to do Clone Wars, you needed a lot of those folks back. What I liked is that they didn’t just put all that back together only to let them go again.”

The people who worked on Clone Wars being a part of the new series makes sense, given that it will be following characters who were first introduced in Clone Wars. And as Sam Witwer points out, it’s good that the people who were brought back to work on Clone Wars, will have the chance to tell more stories than those featured in the 12-episode final season.

“So what I saw was brilliant, extraordinary beautiful, beautiful, beautiful animation. I won’t say what it looks like but I will say this, of the quality of Clone Wars where that bar is set, yes absolutely, totally [it meets it].”

While details are scarce it is good to know that Witwer who has not only been a part of the Star Wars universe for years, but is also a huge Star Wars fan and seems excited for the series. Given that he has knowledge of what will be happening in the new Bad Batch series, could it mean he will be returning as Darth Maul once again?

Based on his appearance at the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Maul continued his criminal activity after escaping capture at the end of The Clone Wars. Maybe fans will get the chance to see Maul running the crime syndicates again while the Empire grows. Given the fact that The Bad Batch is taking on mercenary jobs to survive, they could run into Maul while on a mission or maybe even be working for the him themselves.

The Bad Batch Official Synopsis

The series follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch (first introduced in The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill, which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose.

If Witwer’s endorsement is anything to go by, it looks like Star Wars fans should get hyped for the new animated series, The Bad Batch, which is coming to Disney+ in 2021.
