Rami Malek has some secrets to share about Safin.
The latest James Bond film, No Time To Die, has had a number of delays due to the ongoing global pandemic. No Time To Die was originally scheduled to be released in theaters in April, but was delayed until November before being pushed again to April 2, 2021. With theater closures all over the world, it is no surprise that MGM has had to continuously delay the highly anticipated 25th installment in the James Bond franchise which is also Daniel Craig’s final adventure as the famed British agent.
Oscar award winning actor Rami Malek plays the mysterious and terrifying villain Safin in the long-awaited film. GQ has confirmed the connection between Safin and the organization Spectre, “Here’s what we know so far about Safin: he’s a former Spectre assassin…”. Safin is also a powerful figure in the world of terrorism with major facial scarring, but much about him is still unknown. In a recent interview with GQ, Malek shed a bit more light on his No Time To Die character.

RAMI MALEK TALKING ABOUT HIS NO TIME TO DIE VILLAIN
“When I think about Safin I think about someone who is meticulous but measured, and there is something about that that is really unnerving and unsettling,” Malek explained. “He’s someone that at times I feel gives you the sensation that you’re being watched and that again is quite unsettling. He asks you to question what you think is right, what you think is wrong and is your interpretation of those two things as accurate as it seems to be.”
Malek’s character Safin will be a formidable foe for Bond to go up against. With James Bond having to come out of retirement to go up against the terrifying Safin. Malek said that the toughest part about playing Safin was getting into the mind set of someone as evil and clinical as this character. This shouldn’t be a surprise as Safin, like many villains, sees himself as a hero believing that wiping out millions of people will ultimately help to better the world.

“I think you start asking questions about what evil is. And with this character especially I find him fascinating because he can detach from empathy in order to meticulously carry out his will and I start to wrap myself up in who that person is psychologically.”
“He’s ruthless and that might be – I’m in danger of giving too much away here – a result of something that’s happened to him. but even acknowledging that taps into the analytical side of him as well. I think the fact that he can still find a way to appreciate his own evil is something that is quite petrifying and psychologically something that was not easy for me to tap into.”
From what Malek says, it sounds like Safin could be remembered as one of Bond’s most terrifying and impressive adversaries. Safin is a man bent on revenge, but as of now his origins and motivations are unknown which adds to the sinister feel of this character.
Malek also talked a bit about Safin’s look, “It’s not the typical Savile Row Bond villain that we’re used to,” Malek says. Malek recalled meeting Daniel Craig for the first time while wearing the make-up. Craig, not expecting Malek to be sporting his character’s facial scarring, actually took a step back away from Malek.
