Our review for the new Netflix original superhero comedy Thunder Force, starring Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy.
Superhero stories are dominating the film industry. It seems logical that Netflix would like a piece from that cake and therefore has quite a few superhero oriented projects already released or in the works. The newest one is a comedy with Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, which sounds great on paper, but Thunder Force sadly is a total miss.
Melissa Leo’s character says at near the middle of the movie “I’m unbelievably bored” and I couldn’t relate more. There is nothing interesting or fun about this movie. The screenplay is just about enough to call it generic, the performances are lifeless, and the humor just doesn’t hit. There wasn’t a single funny scene in this 105 minutes long movie.
With a talented cast like this, there definitely was potential for a comedic superhero story. Director Ben Falcone, who is married to Melissa McCarthy, just doesn’t find an interesting style of filmmaking nor storytelling, as Thunder Force is the latest collaboration between him and McCarthy that just isn’t good. The only “highlight” is Jason Bateman together with Bobby Cannavale, who had one amusing exchange. However, in a movie about two female superheroes, the highlight shouldn’t be two men.
Thunder Force hasn’t anything going for it as it lacks quality comedy, has a mediocre screenplay and overall filmmaking, and therefore sadly doesn’t add anything new or interesting to the superhero genre. It’s not worth watching.
