Here Is How Star Wars Set Up Their Own Multiverse And Why Now Is The Perfect Time To Explore It

Star Wars has built an impressive universe over decades of storytelling and in that time they have managed to set up the perfect way to introduce a Star Wars multiverse.
Star Wars saga

Star Wars is a vast and epic universe that has been built over four decades across film, television, comics, and books. Star Wars has not only created a universe, they’ve already introduced the perfect way to dive into a Star Wars multiverse.

In the animated series Star Wars Rebels, Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger finds The World Between Worlds, a dimension of the Force that connects all of space and time. And although it is seen in Rebels as moments in a single timeline, this is the perfect way to make a Star Wars multiverse.

STAR WARS’ THE WORLD BETWEEN WORLDS AND THE ONES

The World Between Worlds is only briefly touched upon and the rules are not entirely clear, which leaves room for a lot of possibility. Because the rules of The World Between Worlds are so unclear there is the potential that changing a moment in time while in The World Between Worlds could create a new, divergent timeline.

What is clear is that The World Between Worlds is tied to The Ones, aka The Mortis Gods, an enigmatic family of powerful force-wielders. The Father represents balance, The Son represents the Dark Side, and The Daughter represents the Light Side. First introduced in The Clone Wars, their abilities and connection to The Force was unparalleled, with The Daughter proving this when she was able to resurrect Ahsoka Tano, The Son had the ability to show Anakin Skywalker his future, while The Father was able to erase that knowledge from Anakin’s mind.

Although these beings were seemingly killed that doesn’t necessarily mean the end, especially for Force users. Using these three beings and The World Between Worlds in a similar way to Marvel’s The Watcher in What If…? could be the perfect entry point into a Star Wars multiverse that doesn’t disrupt the current canonical timeline.

A Star Wars multiverse is not without precedent as the franchise has dabbled in the multiverse in a short run of comics called Star Wars Infinities, that ran from 2002-2004. Star Wars Infinities dedicates four issues to a story based in each of the three original trilogy films. Each Star Wars Infinities changes a pivotal moment in each of the films that completely changes the outcome of the story.

With A New Hope Luke Skywalker fails to destroy the Death Star, in Empire Strikes Back Han Solo is unable to save Luke on Hoth and the young Jedi freezes to death, and for Return Of The Jedi the pivotal change is when the rescue mission that Luke and Leia mount to save Han from Jabba the Hutt goes terribly wrong. One moment changed creates a completely different story.

Star Wars already has a huge library of existing content to pull from for potential multiverse stories, not only with the Star Wars Infinities comics. But the books and comics that are now labeled Star Wars Legends, which includes the Star Wars Infinities comics, are full of fan favorite characters and stories. Although many of these tales contradict not only the current canon, but each other, by using the multiverse Star Wars could potentially explore some of the Legends books and comics that can’t fit into canon.

A multiverse series also has the potential to explore divergent paths for well-known canon characters. One possibility is to change Padme Amidala’s ending. In 2017, concept artist Iain McCaig revealed that Padme Amidala was originally helping to start the Rebellion in Revenge of the Sith when she realized Anakin was becoming a monster. A multiverse series would potentially be able to explore this, perhaps even showing a world where Padme lived and was secretly a leader in the Rebellion.

In The Clone Wars episodes that introduce The Ones, Anakin Skywalker learns of his fate to become Darth Vader. The Jedi is devastated when he learns his future and plans to kill Palpatine in an attempt to change the future, but The Father erases the knowledge from Anakin’s mind. With a multiverse series, Star Wars could explore a number of possibilities where Anakin retains the knowledge of his future as Darth Vader. He could lose himself to the Dark Side faster as he seemed to in Clone Wars or he could instead warn the Jedi of Palpatine’s true identity.

The multiverse is a hugely popular concept especially now with the MCU’s upcoming Disney Plus series What If…? And the theatrical film Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. DC’s upcoming film The Flash will be exploring the multiverse and the Arrowverse on the CW has been using the multiverse for years which culminated in the crossover event, Crisis On Infinite Earths. Star Wars has the perfect opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Marvel and DC to explore endless story possibilities that pull from canon and non-canon content.

A Star Wars multiverse series can pull from already existing content like Star Wars Legends, Star Wars Infinities, and scrapped storylines. But the franchise is also full of amazing characters and pivotal moments throughout the films and television series that have the potential to change everything . A multiverse series would have the potential to continue exploring this vast universe like never before and this is the perfect time to take advantage of the opportunity that has already been created.
