Avengers Campus is the next big attraction coming to Disneyland and it will be entirely focused on the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers Campus will be full of heroes from the MCU looking for new recruits to train to become the next generation of heroes. Additionally, a number of the heroes featured at the upcoming attraction are no longer alive in MCU canon.
How can this be possible? Thanos never used the six Infinity Stones to snap half of the universe out of existence.
ComicBook attended the Avengers Campus preview and learned:
“So the Avengers and all of us, the guests, we’re recruits. We’re here to just have eyes on the prize there. I think that you’ll find that these events are really happening. It’s really happening,” Dan Fields, Executive Creative Director, Disney Parks Live Entertainment elaborates “The campus exists in the real world, and therefore, those heroes are here and keep an eye on us, keep us all safe. There’s no apocalyptic snap happening in this campus.”
Avengers Campus is not part of the MCU canon, instead it is inspired by the world of MCU. Heroes like Black Widow, Captain America, and Iron Man, who will be wearing new Mark 80 armor, will be welcoming new recruits along with other beloved Marvel heroes like Thor, Black Panther, the Dora Milage warriors, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Wasp, Doctor Strange, and a few of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
“As I mentioned, there’s no snap. What I mean by that is we want there to be some conflict, but we don’t want anyone to feel that there’s an apocalyptic threat to the end of humanity,” Fields continued. “Our friends in the studio do a great job with that. Se we want the conflict to be a little more accessible to the daily guests here.”
Avengers Campus Shows Promise
We know a few of the conflicts that will take place in Avengers Campus. Like on the new Spider-Man ride, WEB Slinger: A Spider-Man Adventure, where Peter Parker’s Spider-Bots begin to wreak havoc and it will be up to the new recruits to work with Spider-Man to stop them.

At Avengers Headquarters our MCU heroes will be on the lookout for the sinister Taskmaster, from the upcoming Black Widow movie. When the infamous Taskmaster does show up he and his mercenaries will battle with the Avengers throughout and even on the roof of Avengers Headquarters. There’s no doubt that Avengers Campus will likely have other exciting surprises in store as well.
“The lovely thing about the comic books and the films is that between them we’ve seen a million different versions of the multiverse, a million different versions of these characters. Avengers: Endgame especially gave us the opportunity to go back in time and then split off in a different timeline,” Walt Disney Imagineer staff writer and Avengers Campus story lead Jillian Pagan explained. “So that’s how we like to look at our activation that we have, if you think about when [the Avengers] went back to 2012 and Endgame, they had a shared history. The two timelines had a shared history up until that point.”

This is not a new concept, especially in light of the upcoming Disney+ Marvel series Loki and What If…?. Loki will follow the version of Loki we saw escape with the Tesseract when the Avengers went back to 2012, during Avengers: Endgame.
What If…? will explore what would have happened if major MCU moments had occurred differently, notably one episode will look at what would have happened if Peggy Carter had gotten the super soldier serum, instead of Steve Rogers. Avengers Campus is just one more piece of the ever-expanding Marvel multiverse.
“And then there was a divergence and Loki takes the Tesseract over here and they’re doing things over there, and in our timeline we have a shared history with the films,” Pagan continued. “We will continue to have a shared history as we move forward, so there’ll be a little bit of fluidity to that timeline, but clearly we live in a version of the multiverse where there are some characters who did not sacrifice themselves for us. They are alive and well and now welcome you to it.”
Avengers Campus is set to open at Disney California Adventure Park July 18, 2020, but considering all Disney Parks are closed during the global pandemic, we will have to wait and see if that will still be the case.
