Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu confirms that the movie will not feature the character Fin Fang Foom and further elaborated the reason.
Marvel Studios is clearly trying not to fall into stereotypes that surrounded the character during his earliest comic book ventures, with their upcoming film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. That is why the titular character’s father is no longer Fu Manchu and instead be a different character known as Wenwu a.k.a The Mandarin.
There have been rumors previously that stated Fin Fang Foom will appear in the MCU movie, but now the Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu himself has debunked those rumors in a recent interview with NBC News.Â
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Official Teaser Trailer
Simu Liu confirms that the film will not feature Fang Foom. While there is no direct quote from the site, it’s noted that “Liu said, that some questionable elements from the source material, like the shape-shifting dragon-like being puzzlingly named ‘Fin Fang Foom’, do not make an appearance in the movie.”
“We knew that we were potentially navigating a minefield, especially when looking at this property that was created by two white men in the 1970s at the height of the kung fu craze. We have not shied away from ripping out whatever doesn’t work in 2019, 2020, 2021.”
He continued:
“From the moment that Marvel Studios decided that there needed to be a voice for Asian characters and a lead Asian character in the space of the [Marvel Cinematic Universe], they have all kind of considered what the best way was to incorporate a story that both celebrates Asianness and all of its wonderful dimensions, and its facets and its nuances, and also celebrates martial arts.”
Despite Simu Liu’s comments, in the last few months, there were leaked photos of Marvel Legends toy series, LEGO sets, and Funko Pops based on the film that suggested there is going to be a water dragon named The Great Protector. If that’s the case, we will have to wait and see what approach Marvel has taken with that dragon character.
In the teaser trailer which was released in April, we can see there are going to be certain mystical elements to the film, but we don’t completely know for sure that there will be any dragon in the film. It sure would be cool to see one though. We can expect that the people at Marvel Studios will find a clever way to approach the Shang-Chi comics.Â
There will surely be some fans left feeling disappointed that the comic book character Foom is being left out, but it’s a decision that makes sense. But there could be a different type of that character serving a different purpose than from the comics making it modern and appealing. This movie is definitely heading down in a more authentic route, and in the end, that’s going to be hugely beneficial for the film.
