[Update: Netflix PR has reached out to us and let us know that while the new project does have some Narcos producers, the Sofia Vergara led series will be a standalone limited drama.]
The Illuminerdi has exclusively learned that Sofia Vergara is in negotiations to star in a new Narcos spin-off for Netflix.
Narcos is one of Netflix’s longest running franchises and soon Narcos: Mexico will be coming to an end with the final season. The third and final season of Narcos: Mexico will debut on Netflix November 5, 2021. While many fans have assumed this would be the end of the franchise we’ve learned some exciting new information that Narcos fans are sure to love!
According to our sources Netflix has a new Narcos spin-off in the works that will follow the queen of Narco-trafficking herself, Griselda Blanco. It looks like the working title for this spin-off is ‘Emerald‘ and we have also learned that Netflix is in negotiations with Sofia Vergara to star as Griselda Blanco.
WHO IS GRISELDA BLANCO AND WHY IS SHE THE PERFECT PERSON TO BE AT THE CENTER OF A NEW NARCOS SPIN-OFF
Griselda Blanco was a major player in the Medellín Cartel before Pablo Escobar. Griselda was known by many names including the Queen of Narco-Trafficking, the Cocaine Godmother and the Black Widow. She earned the name Black Widow for reportedly killing or ordering the death of each of her three husbands. In her prime Griselda was one of the richest most dangerous women in the world. An important drug queenpin in the Medellín Cartel, she pioneered the cocaine trade in Miami.
While in New York in the early 1970s, she became involved with drug trafficking through her relationship with Alberto Bravo, who would later become her second husband. She was not only ruthless, but infamously clever with her involvement, Griselda Blanco was created lingerie with secret compartments to smuggle drugs. However, she fled back to Colombia in 1975 when facing drug charges. She returned to the United States in the late 1970s setting up shop in Miami where she earned her title, The Godmother of Cocaine and began a reign of crime in the city.
Griselda Blanco’s operations were largely responsible for the infamous Miami Drug Wars aka the Cocaine Cowboy Wars in Miami in the late 1970s through the early 1980s. Griselda is believed to be responsible for roughly 200 murders while trafficking cocaine from Colombia to the United States and was the first ever female criminal to become a billionaire. Griselda was arrested by federal agents in 1985, for the 1975 drug charges, and spent nearly 2 decades in prison before being extradited to Colombia. She was shot and killed in Medellín, Colombia in 2012 at the age of 69.
Should Sofia Vergara take the role she could be a fantastic fit for the brilliant, but ruthless drug queenpin. Griselda Blanco, although a criminal, is fascinating due to the brutality with which she ran her criminal empire and the success she had as a Narco. Considering Blanco’s life it would make sense for the series to be set during Blanco’s reign in Miami during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Sofia Vergara would likely be able to not only bring the necessary callousness and cleverness to the role, but a quiet pathos as well.
The first two seasons of Narcos followed Pablo Escobar, the drug kingpin and leader of the Medellín Cartel, along with the authorities attempting to shut him down. The third season took place after the fall of Escobar, as the DEA attempted to stop the rise of the infamous Cali Cartel. Narcos: Mexico follows the early origins of the Mexican drug war with the creation and rise of the Guadalajara Cartel. Griselda Blanco’s story is a perfect fit for the Narcos franchise. And Sofia Vergara could be a powerful actress to lead the series.
The finals season of Narcos: Mexico hits Netflix November 5, 2021. Are you excited for a new Narcos spin-off series? Do you think Sofia Vergara would make a good Griselda Blanco?
