Star Wars fans have a lot to look forward to with the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi debuting at the end of May, Andor, the third season of The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka. Unsurprisingly it seems Lucasfilm has other Star Wars projects in the works that have not yet been announced. One such project that has been in the news quite a bit this year is a mystery Star Wars project that seems to be centered on a younger cast.
Cinelinx first reported on a project focused on pre-teens and teenagers using the term “Stranger Things in space,” to describe the new series. Cinelinx was also the first to report that this new series will be set during the High Republic era, which has yet to be explored on screen after being introduced through Lucafilm’s new publishing initiative. Bespin Bulletin reported that the mystery series, under the codename “Grammar Rodeo,” will begin production this summer.
Bespin Bulletin also reported that a familiar name is attached to the project although no details about who this could be have been hinted at. Murphy’s Multiverse revealed that the series is scheduled to wrap production in December. We at The Illuminerdi recently revealed new character descriptions for five lead characters in the new series, four pre-teens, ages 11-12, and one man in his 30s to 40s. Now, it seems new information about this yet to be announced Star Wars Disney Plus series may have come to light.
WILL JON WATTS AND JON FAVREA BE HELMING THE MYSTERY STAR WARS SERIES?
Discussing Film has reported that Jon Watts is in talks to direct at least one episode of the new series, although this is dependent on his availability. It shouldn’t be a huge shock that Disney is looking at Jon Watts given his highly successful collaboration with Marvel Studios with the Spider-Man trilogy and the highly anticipated Fantastic Four film. Watts seems like an ideal fit for a teenager focused series given his experience with the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy. Spider-Man: Homecoming especially proves Watts’ ability to make a truly engaging coming of age story about teenagers.
Discussing Film has also reportedly heard that Jon Favreau will be executive producing the series. Favreau has pioneered this new era of Star Wars as the writer and executive producer behind The Mandalorian and recently The Book Of Boba Fett. While it isn’t a huge surprise that Favreau seems to be connected to the new series it does raise some questions about what this mystery series will be about. Rumors surrounding this project have suggested that the series could be set during The High Republic era that was first introduced in the Lucasfilm publishing initiative.
However, Favreau’s involvement could hint at another possibility that seemed to have been set up in The Book Of Boba Fett. The Book Of Boba Fett seemed to be setting up Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy as a potential spin-off similar to The Mandalorian setting up The Book Of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. With pre-teens and teenagers at the center of this series along with a man in his 30s to 40s which could be Luke this could be another way to explore the post Empire era through a new perspective.

Although there are no details about the mystery series’ plot, this does seem like the perfect opportunity to dive into Jedi lore through a group of Jedi Younglings or Padawans as they learn from an experienced Jedi Master, either during the High Republic era or during the rises of the New Republic. Favrea has proven his ability to bring exciting Star Wars stories to life and Jon Watts could be a perfect director to explore this new style of live action Star Wars series. Jon Watts potentially helming at least one episode of the new series is beyond exciting especially given the truly amazing job he did with the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy.
