According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lady Gaga (House of Gucci, A Star Is Born, Machete Kills) is in talks to star in Joker 2 as Harley Quinn.
Wilder yet, the project is set to be a musical. You heard that right, Joker 2 is going to be a musical. Talk about a “Bad Romance,” are we right? Nobody?

How will Joker 2 explore the break from reality that its protagonist engages in, now that the cat’s out of the bag as of the first film? That certainly lends itself to Joker 2‘s title: Folie a deux, referring to a shared mental disorder affecting two or more individuals – usually the members of a close family.
Regardless, Todd Phillips pulled off the unimaginable with the predecessor. It only stands to reason that he can do it twice, right?
The Internet Divided
The internet is pretty split on this news. Many didn’t really know what to expect with a sequel to a film like 2019’s Joker, as the film worked great as a self-contained story. It was also questioned how this sequel would work now that the audience is aware that Arthur Fleck is an unreliable narrator and everything that’s happening could just be taking place in his head.

There aren’t many ways to top the original in terms of skewing our view on reality, but a musical is a very interesting way to try. Fact is, the curtain has been pulled on the twist of Joker, and the only real move left is to lean into it.
This sequel will likely have the audience accept from the beginning that they can’t assume anything happening is truly happening, which gives the filmmakers a lot of free rein on what they want Joker and Harley Quinn to do. Theoretically, they can do anything – since they technically aren’t doing anything. And that’s where our potential new leading lady comes in.

With the exciting news of Lady Gaga in talks to star as Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, we imagine Quinn’s character will be a powerhouse performer as the actor is known for her incredible singing career. Many are wondering what her character’s relationship with Joker could be in this film.

Could she work in the psychiatric hospital we saw Fleck in during the final scene of Joker? Will their relationship draw comparisons to the comics, or will Todd Phillips opt for a different version of their story? It’d be interesting to see a more grounded take on Harley Quinn while Margot Robbie continues on as the DC Extended Universe’s more comic-inspired version of the character.
