The most expensive Netflix film yet will become a franchise. Here’s what’s in store for the future of The Gray Man.

After The Russo Brothers culminated the MCU’s Infinity Saga with the cinematic Event Avengers: Endgame, they put their focus on a smaller project: the book adaptation of Cherry, a drama about a soldier suffering from PTSD, who gets addicted to heroin. They collaborated with Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland. Now they are back in the action genre with the most expensive Netflix film yet, The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. The film hit the streamer around two weeks ago and already is an audience hit.

Only a few days later Netflix unveiled their plans for a The Gray Man franchise, as the streamer revealed that a sequel and spin-off film is in production. The news came after the scored a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and debuted as the No. 1 movie in 92 countries with 88.55 million hours of viewing in its opening weekend.

The Russo Brothers will return to helm the sequel while Sierra Six himself, Ryan Gosling will also be back. The Gray Man co-writer Stephen McFeely is set to pen the screenplay.

In an interview with Deadline, Joe Russo had to say about the sequel: “The sequel will be inspired by the Mark Greaney novel. Translating from one medium to another often requires interpretation, but we have an incredible amount of source material from an amazing offer. We’ll draw on that for the sequel.”

The spin-off film will be written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. The duo worked together on Zombieland and Deadpool and are also currently working on Deadpool 3. At this point, there are no specifics about what the spin-off will be about, but there have been some chatters about a Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) prequel or a solo film about Ana De Armas’ character.

Joe Russo had this to say about the spin-off: “Wernick and Reese will write the spinoff and we’re going to do something a little more edgy and experimental with that. It means that one will be a hard R. Can’t say more at this point.

But up next for The Russo Brothers is their adaptation of The Electric State starring Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown. Chris Pratt is in negotiations to join the cast. After deals with Universal Pictures couldn’t be made, the project landed at Netflix, further continuing their collaborations with the Russo’s production company AGBO. They also have Extraction 2, starring Chris Hemsworth ready for a 2023 release on the streamer.

The Gray Man follows Sierra Six (Gosling) a special operations agent, who gets entangled in a conspiracy in his agency. Now he is being hunted around the globe by his former employer and the dangerous ex-agent Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans).

The film has a spectacular supporting cast including Ana De Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, Dhanush, Julia Butters, and Wagner Moura.

I’m happy about this news as I enjoyed The Gray Man. I think there is a lot of potential with this stacked cast and I hope that most of them will return for the sequel. I am intrigued by the spin-off, but more excited for the sequel. Gosling was great in the action star role as he combined the physical aspect with his The Nice Guys attitude, which made for some fun scenes.

The Gray Man is streaming on Netflix.
