The Spider-Verse keeps growing as Zosia Mamet has joined the cast of Sony’s Madame Web film.

It’s been an eventful few weeks for comic book movie fans. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige just blew the roof off on San Diego Comic Con’s famous Hall H as the mastermind behind the MCU has unveiled their plans for Phase 5 and (partly) Phase 6, including two big Avengers films and many more projects. All that while their biggest competitor Warner Bros. just shelved the Batgirl film and likely won’t stop there, as a handful of other announced DCEU projects could fall victim to the management changes.

Sony Pictures on the other hand is quietly doing their thing with their Spider-Man Universe as they are currently shooting the Kraven the Hunter solo film with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead, are hard at work on the script for Venom 3 and an El Muerto film starring Bad Bunny is also slated for a 2024 release. Now they’ve quietly added another actress to their growing cast of the currently in Boston shooting Madame Web film.

THE SPIDER-VERSE GROWS WITH MADAME WEB

Deadline has exclusively revealed that Zosia Mamet has joined the ever-growing cast led by Dakota Johnson. Her role is currently unknown.

Mamet is best known for her role in the hit HBO Max series The Flight Attendant in which she stars alongside The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco. The series earned Mamet a SAG Ensemble nomination. Other than that, she starred in the acclaimed HBO series Girls and appeared in the Oscar-nominated film The Kids Are Alright.

Madame Web has an impressive ensemble cast including Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Gray), Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Emma Roberts (We’re the Millers), Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Tahar Rahim (The Serpent) and Mike Epps (Hangover). Severance star and recent Emmy nominee Adam Scott also joined the cast.

The film is directed by S.J. Clarkson. She already is experienced in the marvel world as she is best known for the Marvel series Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Her most recent work is the Netflix limited series Anatomy of a Scandal. It is written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The duo also wrote another film in the same universe as they penned the script for Morbius. But Kerem Sanga (First Girl I Loved) wrote the first draft for Madame Web.

Recent set photos showed Dakota Johnson as the titular character wearing a red leather jacket. That would match fans’ predictions that she is playing the Julia Carpenter iteration of the character, as it matches her looks in the comics. We also got a first look at Adam Scott in regular street wear, but fans immediately started speculating if he might be playing a version of Peter Parker. While there is no indication or reliable rumors that back up this claim, it really would be perfect casting.

I still don’t know what to make of this movie. The cast is simply stellar and is the most exciting ensemble in a Marvel film by Sony yet. The addition of Zosia Mamet is another fun one, as she was a scene stealer in The Flight Attendant. I am worried about the screenplay as the writer of Morbius doesn’t have the best track record. We also have no information or even rumors about the story, making it hard to estimate what is in store. I am curiously optimistic, as that cast just is very exciting to me. Here’s hoping we will see some Spidey-Versions in the film.
