Les Grossman Spinoff: Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller, and Matthew McConaughey in Talks to Return for Unexpected Movie

It looks like Tom Cruise isn't the only A-list actor returning for Les Grossman, the Tropic Thunder spinoff!

It looks like Tom Cruise isn’t the only A-list actor returning for Les Grossman, the Tropic Thunder spinoff!

Fresh off the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, Deadline surprisingly revealed earlier this month that the Hollywood superstar would return to play his Tropic Thunder character in an upcoming movie.

Thanks to a new report, it looks like Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller, and Matthew McConaughey will join Cruise in the film.

LES GROSSMAN SPINOFF COULD BE A TROPIC THUNDER REUNION

The report, coming from FandomWire, suggests that Ben Stiller, Matthew McConaughey, and Robert Downey Jr. are all in talks to reprise their Tropic Thunder roles.

The report did not clarify to what extent the characters will be in the film, and it looks like the studio will reveal that information when the time comes. Since there was no clarification, that means Stiller, McConaughey, and Downey’s characters could play significant roles in the film, or they could be small cameos like Cruise’s role in the original movie.

The news came a few short weeks after Deadline initially announced the Les Grossman spinoff, and thankfully so because fans immediately began questioning if any other actor would return.

Tropic Thunder quickly received praise from critics and audiences alike after its release in 2008. The action comedy parodied many iconic war films, and its over-the-top characters poked fun at all of Hollywood.

Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman is a satirical example of a Hollywood executive. He’s short-tempered, profane, and loud. He treated everyone around him as horribly as you can imagine, but his dance number at the end of the film is quite iconic. Though the role was small, Cruise snagged a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

Ben Stiller, who directed the movie, played Tugg Speedman, a former Hollywood superstar looking for any role to rejuvenate his once highly successful career.

Matthew McConaughey had a small role, playing Tuggman’s best friend and agent Rick “The Pecker” Peck. Most of McConaughey’s scenes were with Les Grossman, so it’s not surprising that he would be in talks to return for the spinoff.

Robert Downey Jr. played Kirk Lazarus, an Australian Academy Award-winning but extreme method actor. Lazarus portrays an African American character in the movie-within-a-movie Tropic Thunder and undergoes a controversial surgery to change the color of his skin for the role. Funny enough, Downey was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards for his portrayal of Lazarus but lost to Heath Ledger’s legendary performance in The Dark Knight.

Nothing else is known about the upcoming Les Grossman spinoff, but the new report is enough to get most people excited about it.

Cruise clearly has the acting chops to pull off a comedic character, and it will be exciting to see him in a different, less action-focused role. He clearly enjoys the character enough to reprise the role, and Stiller, McConaughey, and Downey coming back to join him is just the cherry on top.

There’s no planned release date for the spinoff yet, and with a cast including so many massive movie stars, it might prove challenging to get them all in one place. Cruise currently has his hands full with Mission Impossible 8, so don’t expect the Les Grossman movie to start shooting anytime soon.
