Tom Cruise has a lot of interesting projects in the works.

Top: Gun Maverick is still the talk of the town. The currently highest grossing film of 2022 just crossed $1.3 Billion at the Global Box Office and just became the seventh highest grossing film of all time domestically. While it continues to break records at the box office, Awards experts also predict the film to be a surprisingly huge Oscar player next year. Audiences seemingly can’t get enough of Tom Cruise and the actor won’t stop here.

The Sky Is No Limit For Tom Cruise

Top Gun: Maverick

Along with Top Gun: Maverick we have also gotten the first teaser trailer for the often delayed but highly anticipated Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1. This film looks like it will yet again top the previous entry in the franchise and give us another action spectacle. While we have to wait until next year to see that, Cruise is already working on Part 2 or Mission impossible 8. He was recently photographed in the UK while doing another death-defying stunt called “speed flying”.

But Cruise won’t stop there as the actor has 3 new projects in the early stages of development and they are not what you expect.

Deadline has exclusively revealed the news. All three projects are being developed by Cruise and writer/producer/director Christopher McQuarrie.

The duo started working together on Jack Reacher. After that McQuarrie came on board and directed every Mission Impossible film starting with Rogue Nation. He also co-wrote several of Cruise’s films including Edge of Tomorrow and Top Gun: Maverick, which he also produced.

The first project Deadline revealed is a new original action film they set up with franchise potential. McQuarrie recently stated in an interview that he and Cruise are looking to make something a bit darker and grittier than Mission Impossible.

The second film is an original song and dance style musical, which they are developing as a star vehicle for Cruise. The actor has long been interested in doing a musical. He learned to sing like a rock star for Rock of Ages, and he would dance as well.

Lastly, Deadline revealed that McQuarrie and Cruise are looking to bring back Les Grossman. That is the character the actor played in a cameo role in the celebrated comedy film Tropic Thunder. At this time, it is unknown whether they want to make an original film just around the character or if they want him to be in one of the other two projects.

Deadline also revealed that McQuarrie is writing all of these projects in collaboration with Cruise, but it is currently unknown if he’ll also direct/produce any of them.

They also have a fourth project in development, which is the untitled film that Cruise will make with director Doug Liman. The project will be shot in outer space with NASA and SpaceX. McQuarrie is producing the film. Universal Pictures has signed on as the studio and the project will come next for Cruise and McQuarrie according to Deadline. Cruise worked together with Liman on Edge of Tomorrow and American Made.

I think all these projects sound very exciting. After Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and especially Fallout I can’t wait for the (seemingly) last two films in the franchise. Another new action franchise does also sound exciting, especially with Cruise’s mindset of doing his incredible stunt. But a musical has my interest as well. I must admit I haven’t fully seen Tropic Thunder yet, but with the clips I’ve seen, a Les Grossman return could be comedic gold. I’m all for Cruise’s and McQuarrie’s continuing work relationship.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 hits theatres on July 14, 2023.
