We have gotten plenty of exciting news for Pixar’s 2023 line-up, during their presentation at this year’s D23 Expo.

Disney fans are still buzzing after this exciting D23 weekend. The studio has held its own convention, at which all the different studios like Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar Animation Studios, Lucasfilm, and Marvel Studios have held a presentation to give attendees a look at the future.

And while Marvel and Star Wars shattered the internet with exciting reveals and trailers for Secret Invasion or The Mandalorian Season 3, Animation fans are also buzzing about the exciting announcements from Pixar.

After Disney started the presentation with their live-action content including first looks at Haunted Mansion and Snow White, as well as the trailer premiere of The Little Mermaid, Pixar’s Pete Docter took the D23 stage.

The studio started their presentation with some concept art and a first-look poster at their upcoming original film Elemental. Attendees even got to see a first teaser trailer. Pixar originally revealed this film, ahead of their most recent release Lightyear back in May.

Elemental Official Synopsis

“In a city where fire, water, land, and air residents live together, a fiery young woman and a go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: How much they actually have in common.”

We now also know who is voicing our two leading characters. Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: Dominion, Archive 81) will voice Wade, while Leah Lewis (The Half of It, Seattle Firefighters) will voice Ember.

The film is directed by Peter Sohn, who voiced many iconic characters in Pixar’s catalog. Lastly, he was the voice of the Sox in Lightyear. But Sohn also directed the Pixar film The Good Dinosaur. He will collaborate again with producer Denise Ream.

Elemental will hit theatres on June 16, 2023.

The studio then continued its presentation with a new look at their first-ever long-form series Win or Lose. The project was originally unveiled back in December of 2020 during Disney’s Investors Day. While attendees got to see the first clip of the show, Pixar officially released new concept art.

The series also got its first official cast member as Will Forte (MacGruber, How I Met Your Mother) has joined the project as Coach Dan.

Win or Lose is being developed by Carrie Hobson, who has worked on multiple Pixar films including Luca and Toy Story 4, and Michael Yates, who is a newcomer to the studio as he previously worked on only one short film.

Win Or Lose Official Synopsis

“The series will follow a middle school softball team in the week leading up to their championship game, and each episode is told from the perspective of a different character.”

Win or Lose hits Disney+ in the Fall of 2023.

I am very much looking forward to Pixar’s 2023 slate. Elemental seems like a really fun premise and the first concepts arts also look spectacular. The first voices from D23 described it as Zootopia meets Avatar: The Last Airbender, which sounds very promising to me. Peter Sohn’s previous directorial work The Good Dinosaur is often shamed as one of Pixar’s worst films and a bad film in general, which I don’t agree with. I am interested to see if he can redeem himself with his second feature film.

I adore the animation style of Win or Lose and the premise is something that feels totally in the veins of Pixar. But it remains to be seen how the studio works with the TV format, as we’ve yet only see them do some short-film collections. I have yet to see Cars on the Road, so maybe that could give us a better understanding. Nonetheless, I can’t wait for both projects.
