The 95th Academy Awards have aired. Time to take a closer look at the winners.
The 2023 Oscars are over. This time the ceremony happened without any incidents, but therefore with many memorable moments and history-making wins.
So without further ado, time to take a closer look at the winners of the 95th Academy Awards:
BEST PICTURE
RELATED: THE 92ND ACADEMY AWARDS MADE HISTORY: A LIST OF EVERY WINNER
Nominees: Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, TÁR, Avatar: The Way of Water, All Quiet in the Western Front, Women Talking, Triangle of Sadness
Winner: Everything Everywhere All at Once
The multiversal family drama made history. It won the most awards as a Best Picture winner since Slumdog Millionaire. And according to IGN, it is the most-awarded film of all time. A very deserving and exciting winner as this film just proves again what an “Oscar film” can be.
BEST DIRECTOR
Nominees: The Daniels – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Martin McDonagh – The Banshees of Inisherin, Todd Field – TÁR, Steven Spielberg – The Fabelmans, Ruben Ostlund – Triangle of Sadness
Winner: The Daniels – Everything Everywhere All at Once
Most awards pundits (including myself) predicted this to happen, but it was still exciting to see. The directing duo also held a great speech.
BEST ACTOR
Nominees: Brendan Fraser – The Whale, Austin Butler – Elvis, Colin Farrell – The Banshees of Inisherin, Bill Night – Living, Paul Mescal – Aftersun
Winner: Brendan Fraser – The Whale
This was one of the most exciting races of the night as it felt like both Brendan Fraser and Austin Butler had a 50% chance of winning. As soon as The Whale won Best Make-Up and Hairstyling, it seemed like the deal was sealed.
BEST ACTRESS
Nominees: Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Cate Blanchett – TÁR, Ana De Armas – Blonde, Andrea Riseborough – To Leslie, Michelle Williams – The Fabelmans
Winner: Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once

Considering the enormous applause Everything Everywhere All at Once got every single time it was mentioned, it feels like the race between Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh wasn’t so close. Michelle Yeoh became only the second woman of color to win this category after Halle Berry, who also presented the award alongside last year’s winner Jessica Chastain. What a great win!
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Nominees: Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Brendan Gleeson – The Banshees of Inisherin, Barry Keoghan – The Banshees of Inisherin, Judd Hirsch – The Fabelmans, Brian Tyree Henry – Causeway
Winner: Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once
This might have been off of the most locked categories of the night, but it was still so great to see Ke Huy Quan win here. He delivered an emotional speech and it was such a treat seeing him this excited the entire evening.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Nominees: Angela Basset – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon – The Banshees of Inisherin, Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Stephanie Hsu – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hong Chau – The Whale
Winner: Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once

The hardest category to predict this year probably was Best Supporting Actress. It was a race between Angela Basset, Kerry Condon, and Jamie Lee Curtis and it felt like all three actresses could have easily won here. Jamie Lee Curtis surprisingly won the Screen Actors Guild Awards just a few weeks ago and it looks like it happened at just the right time as it took her right onto the Oscar stage. That also makes Everything Everywhere All at Once the first Best Picture winner that won three acting categories.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Nominees: Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, The Banshees of Inisherin, Triangle of Sadness, TÁR
Winner: Everything Everywhere All at Once
Another relatively easy prediction as films that win Best Picture most of the time also win in the screenplay categories. This marked the first out of three times The Daniels took the stage to thunderous applause.
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Nominees: Women Talking, Top Gun: Maverick, Glass Onion, Living, All Quiet on the Western Front
Winner: Women Talking
The predicted frontrunner took the win. But it might have been closer than expected as people started to question a possible upset as All Quiet on the Western Front started to sweep through the technical categories. A deserving win and a nice end for Women Talking, which went through a lot of up and downs during Awards season.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Nominees: Empire of Light, Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, TÁR, Elvis, All Quiet on the Western Front
Winner: All Quiet on the Western Front
The predicted frontrunner took the win. This also started the surprising overperformance of All Quiet on the Western Front. Most pundits predicted the film to win 3 Oscars but it went home with 4.
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
Nominees: Avatar: The Way of Water, All Quiet on the Western Front, Babylon, The Fabelmans, Elvis
Winner: All Quiet on the Western Front
A rather surprising outcome in this category as the war drama beats the frontrunners Babylon and Elvis. This just shows how much the academy loved All Quiet on the Western Front.
BEST EDITING
Nominees: Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, TÁR
Winner: Everything Everywhere All at Once
This is unsurprising as well as Everything Everywhere All at Once collected at least one below-the-line category win next to its sweep in the above-the-line categories.
BEST MAKE-UP AND HAIRSTYLING
Nominees: The Whale, Elvis, The Batman, All Quiet on the Western Front, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Winner: The Whale
As already mentioned this category went to the film, whose leading actor ultimately won the Best Actor Oscar.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Nominees: Babylon, All Quiet on the Western Front, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans
Winner: All Quiet on the Western Front
This award infuriated a lot of people as Babylon‘s score has a lot of fans and was the film’s biggest shot at an Oscar win. I prefer the Babylon score, but I also didn’t dislike the score of All Quiet on the Western Front.
BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Nominees: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Elvis, Babylon, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris
Winner: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
The MCU film surprisingly takes the win once again after Ruth Carter won the same award for the first film. Very happy with this choice!
BEST SOUND
Nominees: Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Elvis, All Quiet on the Western Front
Winner: Top Gun: Maverick
Considering the performance of All Quiet on the Western Front, it is almost a surprise that Top Gun: Maverick won here.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
RELATED: FINAL 2023 ACADEMY AWARDS WINNERS PREDICTIONS
Nominees: Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, All Quiet on the Western Front
Winner: Avatar: The Way of Water
A very obvious winner and the most deserving of the noms. But there was a time in the evening were people thought that All Quiet on the Western Front could upset here, as well as in the category above.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
Nominees: RRR, Top Gun: Maverick, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Tell It Like a Woman
Winner: RRR
A great winner! The live performance also was one of the highlights of the evening. RRR deserved more recognition, but it’s great that it won here.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Nominees: Pinocchio, Turning Red, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Sea Beast
Winner: Pinocchio
The film which basically won every award in this category during this awards season also won here. Who doesn’t like to see Guillermo Del Toro on stage?!
BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE
Nominees: All Quiet on the Western Front, EO, The Quiet Girl, Argentina, 1985, Close
Winner: All Quiet on the Western Front
No surprises here considering the overperformance of the German film. A deserving win.
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Nominees: All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Navalny, All that Breathes, Fire of Love, The Territory
Winner: Navalny
The Academy chose a deserving winner. I might have liked Fire of Love a bit more, but Navalny is undoubtedly a great documentary.
BEST ANIMATED SHORT
Nominees: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, The Flying Sailor, Ice Merchants, My Year of Dicks, An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It
Winner: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse
The expected winner also took the price.
BEST LIVE-ACTION SHORT
Nominees: Irish Goodbye, Ivalu, Le Pupille, Night Ride, The Red Suitcase
Winner: An Irish Goodbye
An Irish Goodbye beats Le Pupille and Ivalu and also delivered a great Oscar moment as the entire crowd sang Happy Birthday to one of the film’s stars.
BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT
Nominees: The Elephant Whisperers, Haulout, How Do You Measure a Year?, Martha Mitchell Effect, Stranger at the Gate
Winner: The Elephant Whisperers
This award was expected to either go to Stranger at the Gate or the eventual winner, The Elephant Whisperers.
