Chris Pine revealed that Patty Jenkins has revealed some of the story of Rogue Squadron to him. At Disney Investor Day Kathleen Kennedy announced a slew of new Star Wars projects most of which are upcoming Disney Plus series like The Bad Batch, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and more. And while it is understandable that Disney Plus would be a big focus for Disney and Lucasfilm especially given the success of The Mandalorian, there was some news on the movie side as well.
The Skywalker Saga officially came to an end in 2019, but the next film in the franchise will not hit theaters until 2023. The next film and director were revealed during the Disney Investor Day presentation to be none other than Rogue Squadron set to be directed by Patty Jenkins.
Long time Star Wars fans were beyond ecstatic with the news and the obvious connection to the Rogue Squadron video game and the X-wing novels. Although the film will not be based directly on the Star Wars Legends material, that doesn’t mean their impact is forgotten. Jenkins said in an interview with IGN,
“We’re doing something original with great influence from the games and the books. There’s a lot of things being acknowledged and understood about the greatness of all of those things, but yes, it’s an original story and I’m so psyched to do it.”
In the original teaser that was released during Disney Investor Day, Jenkins talked about the thrill of watching her father and his squad fly their F4s across the sky and the tragedy of when he lost his life while serving. Her passion and investment in this project is obvious especially as she talked about her lifelong dream of making “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time”. Wonder Woman showed Jenkins’ ability to make an incredible war film and hopefully she brings that into the upcoming Rogue Squadron film.
CHRIS PINE REVEALS PATTY JENKINS HAS TOLD HIM ABOUT ROGUE SQUADRON
While details about the film haven’t been revealed for obvious reasons, not everyone is in the dark. Chris Pine who starred in Jenkins latest film, Wonder Woman 1984, revealed in an interview with Collider that Jenkins has in fact told him a bit about Rogue Squadron.
“I had spoken to her about, not my involvement, but the story [for Rogue Squadron]. It sounds really, really great. But I’m ecstatic for her, excited for what she’s about to embark on. If there’s anyone that can reimagine and breathe fresh, new life into it, it’s her.”
Chris Pine is in talks to star in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons film and The Illuminerdi revealed key details about the character he is slated to play. Pine also starred in Wonder Woman 1984, the sequel to the groundbreaking 2017 film Wonder Woman. Pine also makes it clear that they spoke about the story for Rogue Squadron, but not his personal involvement. Although there’s always a chance that he could become a part of the project in the future. While the upcoming slate of Star Wars series are beyond exciting it will be nice to see a Star Wars film in theaters once again, come 2023.
