Since the return of The Clone Wars, there has been rumblings about plans for a sequel series for Star Wars Rebels was in the works. After the massive success of season 7 of The Clone Wars, the Star Wars Rebels sequel series was reportedly in early development and was set to utilize The Clone Wars animation style from the final season. However, it appears that the sequel series has been scraped in favor of the Disney + series Ahsoka to continued the story where Rebels left off.

According to an exclusive with Kessel Run Transmission, the upcoming Ahsoka series will take the spot of the rumored animated Star Wars Rebels sequel.

The successful debut of Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano in live-action prompted series creators and producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to make the decision that the story of Star Wars Rebels should play out in live-action instead. This comes at no surprised as Ahsoka named dropped longtime fan-favorite villain Grand Admiral Thrawn on The Mandalorian.

However, this report doesn’t signal Ahsoka’s end in the animation either. Kessel Run states:

“This is not the end for Ahsoka in animation…From what we’ve heard, Jon has successfully convinced Filoni to tell the next chapter of Ahsoka’s journey specifically in a tie-in with Rebels in live-action. The next part of the journey is going to be told that way.”

Ahsoka is also rumored to reprise her role in the upcoming The Bad Batch coming out this year, so it’s not farfetched to see the Jedi emerge on other Star Wars properties.

The channel also revealed that production for Star Wars Rebels was projected to begin last November, until Lucasfilm made the decision to cancel the series.

“Basically, the Rebels sequel was already in production, even eyeing a November 2020 release date; Taylor Gray even recorded lines for Ezra Bridger, but after the success of The Mandalorian, that’s where Jon was like ‘Okay, we can bring these characters into live-action and tell the story this way.'”

They also briefly mention that Sabine Wren will be a recurring character in Ahsoka, only this time it will be in live-action. It’s likely the story will focus on the Jedi’s hunt for Thrawn and searching for the whereabouts of Ezra Bridger. One thing that is confirmed about the series is that it will take place in the same timeline as The Mandalorian.

Hopefully that means we’ll be able to see characters like Hera Syndulla and other members of the Ghost on the show. Question is will they bring back the voice actors to reprise their roles, or cast new actors for their live-action counterparts. While it’s sad to hear another animation project being scraped, knowing that a few familiar faces from animation could cross over into live-action makes us excited for any future developments of the series.

What do you think of Star Wars Rebels possibly coming to live-action? Do you think that it will be about the search for Ezra Bridger, or do you think he will a regular part of the cast?
