Robbie is going to star and produce a prequel to the Ocean’s franchise and Jay Roach is hired to direct it, having previously directed the actress to a best-supporting actress Oscar nomination in the 2019 drama Bombshell.
Margot Robbie Takes On Her Next Franchise
WB’s Ocean’s franchise was launched in 2001 with Steven Soderbergh directing all the movies in the trilogy. Ocean’s Eleven is a fast-talking, stylish A-list heist comedy that starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and others. It began as a riff and a loose remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film but turned into a successful franchise.
After the first movie grossed more than $450 million worldwide theatrically, Soderbergh and company stirred out two more star-packed installments, in 2004 and 2007, respectively. The franchise reemerged in 2018 with Ocean’s 8, a female-centric spinoff led by Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and others.
The Ocean’s title is a recognizable brand that signifies ensemble heist comedies, and once again this new project will allow the studio to stack the deck with big names and colorful backdrops. The team-up between Robbie and Roach once again is exciting.
Carrie Solomon is penning the script and the details are being kept in the vault, but it is described as an original Ocean’s Eleven that is set in Europe in the 1960s. According to the insiders, the project is in active development and the goal is to begin production in spring 2023.
Jay Roach is known for directing comedy films like Austin Powers movies as well as the Meet the Parents series. He recently directed all eight episodes of the first season of Apple TV’s upcoming comedy High Desert.
Margot Robbie is well versed in heists, having stolen scenes as the fan-favorite DC character Harley Quinn in three films for Warner Bros, most recently 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Margot Robbie till this point has starred in many WB movies. She is currently filming Barbie for the studio, in which she will be portraying the iconic toy in a feature she is also producing.
Robbie serves as a producer with Tom Ackerley, her partner at the production banner LuckyChap. Director Roach is also producing, along with his executive at shingle Delirious Media, Michelle Graham. Executive producing are Gary Ross, Olivia Milch, and LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara.
