We’ve got some new information to share about Joe Locke’s highly mysterious character in Agatha: Coven of Chaos, as well as some new casting details.
Marvel fans are buzzing. The highly anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever finally hits theaters today. It will end the MCU’s Phase 4, even though it won’t be the last Marvel Studios project to be released this year, as the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is ready to get fans into Christmas spirit at the end of November. And Marvel has no plans to stop as its next two projects: the highly anticipated Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the thrilling new Disney+ series Secret Invasion already have gotten their first trailers and are both set to be released in the first quarter of 2023.
Marvel Studios is also working on the future of their small screen universe as there are two big Disney+ series that are gearing up its cast. The Wonder Man Disney+ series has added Aquaman and Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the titular superhero. Ben Kingsley joined the project over two months ago and we at The Illuminerdi have exclusively revealed that Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk is being eyed for a role in the show.
Another series that is almost ready to start pre-shoots is the mysterious WandaVision spin-off Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Over the past few weeks, there have been a ton of updates about the show starting with the casting of Heartstopper star Joe Locke, which was exclusively revealed by Variety. Only a day after, we at The Illuminerdi have exclusively broke the news that Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza is set to join the mysterious show as well. Deadline followed it up, revealing the casting of Maria Dizzia and Ali Ahn. Then to end the week we exclusively revealed some of the show’s directors as well as the episode count for Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
As is often the case when it comes to Marvel Studios productions, it is unknown who all these actors are playing, but with a new week comes more news as we can exclusively shed some light on Joe Locke’s mysterious character and reveal some more casting details as well.
Since Joe Locke’s casting broke fans have been speculating about who the young actor could be playing and they ended up with two possibilities. First would be Billy Kaplan aka Wiccan, the reincarnation of Wanda Maximoff’s (Elizabeth Olsen) son, or Nicolas Scratch, the son of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn).
We at The Illuminerdi can now shed some light on the young actor’s character that could clear up the speculation.
JOE LOCKE: THE NEXT YOUNG AVENGER?
Our sources described Joe Locke’s character as a gay teen with a darker sense of humor. He lives in the moment, is witty, astute, and can sometimes be a little fanboy. Marvel was looking for an actor with great comedic timing and a focus on dramatic acting chops.
The last characteristic is a great indication that Joe Locke is indeed playing Wiccan, who in the comics is a big fan of the Scarlet Witch and Thor. Furthermore, his first superhero name was “The Asgardian”.
In addition, Marvel Studios is casting another two roles that could further confirm that Locke is playing Wiccan.
The studio is currently casting Patrick, a man in his 40s, who is authentically Jewish. He is supposed to appear in 1-3 episodes. But that’s not all, as they are also casting a white woman, also in her 40s and also optimally authentically Jewish. We can confirm that Maria Dizzia has been cast in this role. Our sources also indicated that Ali Ahn is set to join Aubrey Plaza in the group of female supporting characters. While Deadline has confirmed that Plaza is playing a villain.
While we couldn’t confirm this with absolute certainty, the descriptions of Patrick and Dizzia’s character would pretty much fit Jeff and Rebecca Kaplan, the parents of Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan.
Lastly, Marvel is casting Evelyn. They are looking for all kinds of actresses in almost any age range with any ethnicity. She has to portray a strong, evil, and ancient soul and has to convey emotions without speaking. Her presence alone must have a chilling effect on the ones in her midst. The role requires strong physical agility and Marvel highly encourages actresses with stunt, dance, acrobatic, movement, and motion capture experience to apply. Evelyn is set to appear in three episodes.
Agatha: Coven of Chaos is set to star: Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Emma Caulfield, Ali Ahn, and Maria Dizzia. Agatha: Coven of Chaos is set to premiere on Disney+ in Winter 2023/2024.
