The Illuminerdi breaks down Marvel Comics character Union Jack and how he could potentially be introduced into the MCU.

The MCU has introduced tons of amazing characters during the Infinity Saga and the beginning of Phase Four. Although there is an endless supply of Marvel Comics characters that could make their debut either in films or MCU series. Some of the most highly anticipated include the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, mutants, the Eternals, Moon Knight, and Namor the Sub-Mariner.

One character that would be a fantastic addition to the MCU is Union Jack. There have been three iterations of Union Jack with the first being James Montgomery Falsworth who fought with the Freedom Five in WWI and the Invaders in WWII. Falsworth befriended and fought alongside Captain America during this time. Between WWI and WWII Falsworth retired and started a family having two children both of whom would eventually become superheroes in their own right. James Montgomery Falsworth often fought against the vampire Baron Blood, his own brother John Falsworth.

Brian Falsworth, James Montgomery Falsworth’s son, became the second Union Jack. Brian was initially supportive of peace between Germany and the UK at the end of the 1930s and traveled to Germany with his friend Roger Aubrey. However, when the pair changed their minds they were captured and held by Nazis. Brian was given a version of the super soldier serum by his cellmate German biochemist Eric Schmitt and was immediately physically enhanced.

Brian escaped prison and became the Destroyer fighting against Nazis in Germany. Brian and his father later reconciled and Brian took over his father’s moniker, Union Jack. Brian, like his father, fought with the Invaders. At one point Brian fought Thor briefly, after the Asgardian was fooled by Hitler, and gained the ability to discharge electricity from his body. Brian was also one of the first gay characters chronologically in Marvel Comics.

The current Union Jack is Joseph Chapman, the first Union Jack who isn’t a Falsworth. Joseph was friends with the grandson of James Montgomery Falsworth and the nephew of Brian Falsworth. Joseph Chapman was offered this impressive legacy by James Montgomery Falsworth after helping him and Captain America defeat a resurrected Baron Blood. As Union Jack, Joseph Chapman was possessed by the spirit of Pendragon and being a part of the Knights of Pendragon.

After being possessed Joseph did manage to retain a small portion of the powers giving him low level superhuman abilities. Chapman was also a part of the modern-day Invaders. At one point in the comics Joseph worked with MI5 to track down vampires as part of a team alongside Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Joseph also fought alongside other British heroes as Union Jack when the Skrulls invaded the UK in Captain Britain And MI13, a Secret Invasion tie in comic series.

The first Union Jack, James Montgomery Falsworth has technically already been a part of the MCU. James was one of the Howling Commandos that fought with Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger. Although he was never shown as the full-fledged hero Union Jack in the film or any other MCU films or series.

HOW COULD UNION JACK BE INTRODUCED INTO THE MCU?

Either Brian Montgomery or Joseph Chapman would be interesting characters to bring into the MCU. Brian Montgomery not only has his father’s legacy to carry, but he could be part of the MCU’s growing roster of super soldiers. Brian Montgomery could also be someone who is looking to live up to his father’s legacy, if not as a superhero then a hero and POW during WWII.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming Principal Morita is the descendant of Jim Morita another one of the Howling Commandos that fought alongside Captain America and actually has a photo of him in his office. This could be an interesting way to bring in a new generation of heroes with connections to the heroes of the Infinity Saga which seems to be a big part of Phase Four.

Although Joseph Chapman, the current Union Jack in the comics, could work well too considering he also has direct ties to the MCU with a character who has been introduced in Phase Four and one of the upcoming Disney Plus series. Joseph Chapman worked alongside Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine during a mission in the comics. Valentina has appeared in Black Widow and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and based on her scenes it seems like she has an interesting future in the MCU. And considering she seems to be recruiting people with special skills Union Jack could be a character on her list.

In the Secret Invasion tie-in comic series, Captain Britain And MI13, Joseph Chapman fought as Union Jack against the invading Skrulls, alongside many other UK heroes. Many fans have speculated that Valentina could appear in Secret Invasion and Union Jack seems like another good fit for the upcoming Disney Plus series. Introducing new characters from around the globe would help show the worldwide impact the attack of the Skrulls in Secret Invasion has.

Secret Invasion seems like the perfect entry point for Union Jack, but he could make his debut in other upcoming MCU projects as well. All three versions of Union Jack have worked with Captain America throughout the comics which could make Captain America 4 an interesting project for the new hero to make an appearance. This would be especially true if the Union Jack used in the MCU is the descendant of James Montgomery Falsworth who not only fought with Steve Rogers, but also Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Another and perhaps more unexpected upcoming MCU project for Union Jack to potentially appear in is Blade. Union Jack is heavily tied to vampires in Marvel Comics with both Falsworth Union Jacks fighting against John Falsworth aka Baron Blood, the uncle of Brian and brother of James. Joseph Chapman was no stranger to fighting against vampires either. Even with these ties to Captain America and vampires Secret Invasion seems like the most likely entry point especially given that it is a series which has more time to explore the world and the characters.
