A live-action Marvel Zombies project is rumored to be in development following the recent debut in the What If…? series.

What If…? Disney+ series introduced a full-fledged horror genre to Marvel Cinematic Universe. Episode 5 of the new animated series depicted MCU’s version of the Marvel Zombies from the comics. Now the creator of Marvel Zombies, writer Mark Millar, has suggested that there might be live-action plans for the undead heroes.

Although the first Marvel Zombies comic series was created by Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Sean Phillips, the undead heroes were actually introduced first by Mark Millar and Greg Land in the pages of Ultimate Fantastic Four. A recent newsletter that Millar sent out to fans, suggested that a live-action project of some kind could be in the works following the What If…? zombie episode.

Millar Teases Marvel Zombies

While sharing his thoughts on the MCU debut of the Marvel Zombies, Millar wrote that “(if my sources are correct) a little live-action Marvel Zombies further down the line, but you never heard that from me.”

There is no official confirmation of any sort but this is plausible considering Millar’s history with the Marvel characters and the fact he has Hollywood associations, there could be truth to what Millar has heard about Marvel Studios’ plans.

The response to “What If…Zombies!?” has been overwhelmingly positive. Even though this episode ended satisfactorily it had a cliffhanger note just like other episodes. The interesting and common thing about all What If…? episodes is that they end with a comma and not a full stop.

Maybe in season 2 of What If…? we might see few stories from season 1 continue. Among all the episodes that we have seen so far, the Zombie episode is the one that left the audience to crave the most to see the continuation of. I would not be surprised if this story continues in the next season.

One of the feasible destinations for the zombified versions of these characters to make at least a cameo is the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it is possible they could get their own movie or series. Either way, a live-action incarnation of Marvel Zombies will be undeniably exciting, and fans would love to see that happen.

Marvel is taking full advantage of Disney+ by making a ton of shows that pushes the greater story forward by leading into feature films. While Marvel is making The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for December 2022, a Halloween special is also rumored to be in the works as well, reportedly centered on the comic character Werewolf by Night. So getting a Zombie-themed film or spin-off series or a Disney+ special is a possibility.

For now, it’s best to take this news with a pinch of salt, but when Marvel Studios does reveal its future slate, it would absolutely be cool to see a live-action project in the mix. It will be interesting to see how Marvel would pull this off in live-action.

Millar isn’t the only comic writer to recently tipping fans off as to what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may hold. In August, Jim Shooter teased Marvel Studios is developing a live-action Secret Wars project.

Do you think there is truth to Mark Millar’s statement? Did you like the “What If…Zombies!?” episode? What is your favorite What…If? episode so far? Do you want to see Marvel Zombies get live-action treatment? What direction would you like to see this Marvel Zombies project head in?
